ART 112  Tribal Arts I  (3 Credits)  
This course is an exploration of artistic traditions within Indigenous communities through the study of design, patterns, and materials. Students will explore cultural identity through tribal art. Topics include traditional indigenous art making process, interpreting the use of Indigenous art forms, including the history and practices of traditional art.
ART 114  Painting I  (3 Credits)  
This course covers the techniques, concepts, and personal expressions of painting at an introductory level. Students will utilize Indigenous cultures with contemporary painting practices as they learn about color mixing, design techniques, and inventive ways to convey artistic styles. Works of art are analyzed and interpreted to provide students with the ability to critique art based on the principles of design.
ART 124  Three Dimensional Design  (3 Credits)  
In this course students learn about the essential elements of sculpture through an investigation of materials and media. Projects using clay, plaster wrap, and plaster of paris are used to illustrate the use of armatures and three dimensional design and construction. Six units are dedicated to ceramics.
ART 130  Drawing I  (3 Credits)  
This course introduces basic drawing skills and techniques through traditional approaches to line, form, composition, and perspective.
ART 146  Indigenous Beadwork of North Americ  (3 Credits)  
This course combines theoretical understanding with hands-on practical experience, allowing students to create their own beadwork projects. Through the exploration of Indigenous beadwork, students will develop valuable artistic skills by gaining a deeper appreciation for the cultural heritage and resilience embedded in this timeless tradition.
ART 150  Indigenous Ceramics of North America  (3 Credits)  
This course explores the history, techniques, and cultural significance of Indigenous pottery. Students will construct ceramic pottery items using cultural techniques of design and pattern from Indigenous tribes interpreting stylistic and conceptual differences in pottery. .
ART 166  Contemporary Indigenous Art  (3 Credits)  
This course is designed around various contemporary mediums and showcases various Indigenous artists using traditional art forms in modern applications. The course includes discussions and exploration of traditional designs, colors and techniques that can be used in various contemporary forms of art.
ART 204  Indigenous Jewelry  (3 Credits)  
This course introduces students to the history of Indigenous Jewelry. This hands-on and culturally immersive journey invites students to explore the artistry, symbolism, and techniques inherent in crafting Indigenous Jewelry. Students will discover the profound connection between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design while gaining a deeper understanding of the cultural significance embedded in each piece.
ART 210  Art History I  (3 Credits)  
This course takes a comprehensive approach to the study of art history, emphasizing Indigenous artists. Topics include the exploration of traditional art forms, the impact of colonization on artistic expressions, and contemporary resurgence of art in response to social, political, and environmental challenges. Students will engage with primary sources, scholarly texts, and visual materials to understand the evolution of Indigenous art.
ART 212  Tribal Arts II  (3 Credits)  
This course offers students an opportunity to explore the tradition, innovation, and global influences within Indigenous communities and their artistic expression. Students utilize an interdisciplinary approach as they engage with current issues, expression, and communication as they create individual projects utilizing traditional and contemporary practices in Indigenous art.
Prerequisite: ART 112  
ART 227  Studio Arts  (4 Credits)  
This course is a continuation of Introduction to Studio Arts. Students select a media in which to specialize and create a volume of portfolio quality work. Technology is incorporated in the design and production of mixed media pieces and the written interpretations of their works. Students sign contracts specifying the amount and types of work to be completed with a minimum set by the instructor. (Fall)
